Forum Title: Guide on picking carpet please?
Hi, I just had an unfortunate house fire and damaged some carpet, and am researching carpets starting today to replace my old carpet that is 25 years old now, never replaced since home was made in 1995. I am doing the entire second floor and staircase, about 1,200 sqft, over 6 rooms and hallway. There is preexisting foam underlayment, and wood board under that, and I'd like to keep unless it is recommended they be replaced. I live in Georgia, and can buy carpet locally or outside if there are good options. I would prefer to hire a professional instead of DIY. I would like one that is easy to maintain, easy to clean/not stain even with pets, very long lasting. I am okay with paying more for good quality, but would like to avoid very high end range if not much benefit over good options. Sorry if I wasn't detailed enough. Please let me know if I should provide any additional information!

Just one recommendation; based on my nearly 50 years in the floor covering business, do not even consider using the 25year old cushion under your new carpet. That would be similar to buying a new car, and picking up some used tires from the salvage yard for the car. Dick

I would recommend finding Karastan where you are. There should be a shop there with that brand.

I will get new foam with the carpet, and check out a nearby store carrying Karastan carpets. I really like what I am reading about SmartStrand and am thinking about this Karastan SmartStrand Silk one Felted Wool Indescribable Carpet | Karastan Is there a big difference between SmartStrand, SSS, and SmartStrand Silk Reserve? I don't see SSS Reserve clicking around the website so not sure if Karastan has it.
